The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas follows Teo, a seventeen-year-old Jade semidiós and trans son of the bird goddess Quetzal, who never expected to be chosen for a deadly divine competition. Every decade, ten young demigods are selected by Sol to undergo a series of trials that will determine who will carry the Sun’s power across Reino del Sol and who will be sacrificed to sustain its protective magic. When Teo and thirteen-year-old Xio, child of the god of bad luck, are unexpectedly chosen alongside stronger, elite Gold semidioses such as Teo’s rival Aurelio, they are thrust into a high-stakes contest of magic, skill, and survival. Blending queer romance, young adult fantasy, and mythology-inspired worldbuilding, the novel explores rivalry, loyalty, and identity under the pressure of a ritual that demands both heroism and loss.
